New Spirits are heading to Smash Bros. Ultimate

New Spirits are being added to Smash Bros. Ultimate, even after official support ended back in 2021. The new addition will be available for a limited time.

Nintendo revealed on Twitter that starting on January 11 — so tomorrow — players can face off against a series of different characters from recently released games like Tears of the Kingdom and Splatoon 3 as part of the Spirit Board. The event will be a five-day fare and will award you with more gold than usual if you beat them.

We’re still unsure of the franchise’s future as Ultimate is technically finished, with Nintendo moving on back in 2021, and franchise creator Masahiro Sakurai not sure when the next Smash Bros. will happen. When it does happen — which he does assure it will — we may want to brace for a more compact roster compared to the sprawling one we’ve got with Ultimate.

Even though this is a special event, it’s still nice to see Nintendo spotlighting the new games for the people who want something in Smash Bros. related to the latest of the Japanese giant’s wares.

More Smash Jump: Cult of the Lamb’s Sins of Flesh (also dubbed the “sex update”) will be releasing next week, Steam passes a new concurrent user milestone, and Daniel mulls over whether a live-action Zelda film could work.
