Anime is getting popular on Netflix but there’s a catch

People are really vibing with anime on Netflix, growing 10x the viewership than the rest of the streamer’s catalog. Of course, it’s not the biggest win, as most of the viewership comes from anime that it’s simply licensed, but hey, we get it, it’ll take whatever win it can.

As sifted through by Anime by the Numbers (via CinemaBlend), Netflix’s anime viewership is largely in eastern Asia, so while you may see some anime reach a non-English speaking lists all the time, here in the US, it’s hard-pressed to stay at the top for more than a day. Only five of the top 25 anime were actually exclusive to Netflix beyond Asia, meaning we can just assume most of that viewership came from the region where it’s exclusive to.

It’s still a general win for Netflix, as it’s still subscribers paying their fee, but it’s not as impressive that 4.4 billion hours were spent watching anime when a large part of that library is just that Netflix licensed to appear on its service.
