Sega has no plans on releasing any new retro mini consoles. Simply put, it isn’t in the market as a retro game company and it wants to focus on modern fare.
Speaking to The Guardian (via GamingBolt), president and COO, Shuji Utsumi asserted that it isn’t looking at making new mini consoles, akin to the ones it made in the past with the Genesis Mini and its subsequent Genesis Mini 2. Instead, the game maker wants to offer “something new.” That isn’t to say it doesn’t value its legacy, it does, but it also knows if it leans too heavily into the older stuff, it could run the risk to “become history.”
“We are not a retro company. We really appreciate our legacy, we value it, but at the same time, we want to deliver something new – otherwise we’ll become history. That’s not what we’re aiming for.”
Unfortunately, this does put an almost definitive kibosh on the rumored Dreamcast Mini. That said, it’s still a possibility down the line, but we wouldn’t hold our breath as long as Utsumi is in charge.
