Motion Twin is moving on from Dead Cells after next update

Developer Motion Twin is officially moving on from Dead Cells after five years of collaborations and new content. More info is set to come about the Bobbypills produced animated show and a board game, and likely more time dedicated to its next action roguelike in the works.

On Steam, the developer shared the news that the next update — “Clean Cut” on mobile and “The End is Near” on consoles and PC — will mark the end of Dead Cells’ “creative journey.” This decision wasn’t taken lightly, though, as it was something it considered since the successful launch of its Return to Castlevania DLC back in March.

The studio has always been striving to avoid “more of the same,” wanting to keep the Dead Cells experience “fresh and original,” and it seems the studio believes it’s overstaying this belief. As it says, it doesn’t want to “risk diminishing the unique charm” of the title, which is fair considering the unique position this 2D roguelike was in at launch and continues to be in to this day.

This isn’t the end of the franchise itself, considering we’ve got a board game and TV show based on the core game to look forward to. Odds are with Dead Cells winding down, Motion Twin will look to its next venture — Windblown, a 3D Early Access action roguelike played in an isometric view.

This change explains the recent quiet period on updates, as concluding such a partnership required careful planning to ensure a smooth process for everyone, including the community. As always, we will of course continue to find solutions to make sure that all quality of life issues and bugs are properly fixed across all platforms to provide a worthy experience to all of you.”
