Cyberpunk 2077 mod maker pulls VR mod instead of making it free

Luke Ross, the maker of R.E.A.L. VR, a mod framework that turns standard games into VR experiences, has pulled his Cyberpunk 2077 VR experience, blaming CD Projekt Red. The mod maker previously had run-ins with Take-Two Interactive for his Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 VR mods.

Following CDPR getting involved over selling the mod, cites he’d rather pull it than make it free, calling it the “same iron-clad corpo logic,” claiming CDPR should be glad of the extra copies sold.

“In the end it amounted to the same iron-clad corpo logic: every little action that a company takes is in the name of money, but everything that modders do must be absolutely for free.

As usual they stretch the concept of ‘derivative work’ until it’s paper-thin, as though a system that allows visualizing 40+ games in fully immersive 3D VR was somehow built making use of their intellectual property. And as usual they give absolutely zero f***s about how playing their game in VR made people happy, and they cannot just be grateful about the extra copies of the title they sold because of that—without ever having to pour money into producing an official conversion (no, they’re not planning to release their own VR port, in case you were wondering).”

Naturally, those within Ross’ circle are critical of CDPR while those outside, such as on the virtual reality subreddit, are critical of Ross. It’s also worth noting that CDPR is very open about fan-content, even encouraging it, but does directly state that commercial usage (beyond content creators and streamers) is forbidden, rather you can make fan content and accept donations related to the content, but not paywalling it.
