Donkey Kong movie is in the works

A joint Nintendo and Universal filing has surfaced indicating that the two companies are joining forces to make a Donkey Kong movie. Considering the success of the Super Mario Bros. Movie, it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that DK could get some time in the lime light.

Public records (via IGN) share that the two companies under Nintendo Studios and Universal Pictures filed a copyright for an untitled Donkey Kong movie. Now, murmurs of a DK spin-off were happening for some time now, but this is about as concrete as we can expect for some time.

As of late, Nintendo has been heavily investing into multimedia, with the Super Mario Bros. movie’s over billion-dollar box office return definitely helping it feel more comfortable with bringing its IPs to the big screen. Beyond Mario, we already know the live action The Legend of Zelda movie is in the pipeline, though, its stance right now is dubious as its release was pushed back.

Nintendo reuniting with Universal, though, means it’ll likely be an Illumination project and probably involves Seth Rogen as the namesake ape. Meanwhile, a bit of hype can certainly be drawn from Donkey Kong Bananza, which releases later this month.
